Michael Widenius (Bapak Database Dunia) dan kontribusinya di Bidang IT

MySQL merupakan sebuah relational database management system yang populer di kalangan software developer. Penggunanya tidak hanya kalangan developer saja, pelajar pun banyak menggunakannya untuk membantu mereka di perkuliahan Basis Data atau di mata pelajaran aplikasi basis data. Dulunya open source di bawah Sun Microsystem, sampai akhirnya open source dibawah Oracle. Orang yang berada di balik pengembangan MySQL adalah seorang berkebangsaan Finlandia yang bernama Michael Widenius. Akhirnya Monty, begitu panggilannya, membuat sebuah yayasan baru yang menaungi proyek forked MySQL, yaitu MariaDB. MariaDB sendiri dinamai dari anaknya sendiri yaitu Maria.

Menurut Wikipedia, pendiri perusahaan MySQL AB dan CTO dari MariaDB Foundation ini merupakan seorang drop out dari Helsinki University of Technology. Tapi hal tersebut tidak membuatnya patah arang hingga dia bekerja di sebuah perusahaan bernama Tapia Laakso Oy pada tahun 1981.

Kemudian pada tahun 1985 dia mendirikan sebuah perusahaan bernama TCS DataKonsult AB, sebuah perusahaan yang bergerak di bidang data warehouse bersama Allan Larsson. Sampai akhirnya setelah 10 tahun berlalu, bersama David Axmark, Monty membangun versi awal dari MySQL yang akhirnya dirilis pada tahun 1996. Dia merupakan penulis juga dari MySQL Reference Manual yang dirilis pada Juni 2002. Kemudian pada tahun 2003, dia dihargai sebagai Software Enterpreneur of The Year di Finlandia.

MySQL AB akhirnya dijual kepada Sun Microsystems pada Januari 2008, dan akhirnya menjual MySQL kepada Sun dan membuatnya menjadi 10 orang terkaya di Finlandia pada tahun tersebut. Dia meninggalkan Sun pada tahun 2009. Sampai akhirnya dia tidak menyetujui akuisisi MySQL dengan Oracle. Pada tahun 2009 dia mendirikan sebuah aliansi bernama Open Database Alliance dan menjadi titik tonggak MariaDB dilahirkan. Program tersebut diprakarsai oleh Monty dan sebuah perusahaan bernama Percona.

Selain menduduki posisi penting seperti CTO di MariaDB Foundation, Monty juga pernah menduduki jabatan penting di beberapa organisasi seperti Open Database Alliance sebagai pendiri, Monty Program sebagai CEO, Web of Trust by Against Intuition Inc. sebagai Board Member, Vaadin sebagai Board Member, dan Finsor sebagai Board of Advisors.
